I am a huge fan of anything that makes my life easier. I institute systems into my household to make chores like dishes and laundry easier. I have an elaborate system of washing, drying and hanging my clothes based on their fabric types and style.

I just moved into a new apartment, so luckily my closet was a blank canvas to organize. I threw all my clothes on the floor of my room and set out to tackle the hangers. I’ve always had a problem with organization and usually leave my clothes lying around for days before hanging them in my closet. I knew there had to be a better way to hang clothes to save space in my closet so I started experimenting.

1. Organize your clothes

Sit down and take stock of your wardrobe to see if there is anything you really can get rid of. I have been hauling all of my clothes around for months during my move from Oregon and I finally realized some of them had to go. I kept all my favorite items I couldn’t get rid of or had sentimental value. I boxed these up and put them up on the top shelf of my closet.

Next, I organized by season. I put obvious summer clothes like dresses and shorts away into a box for next year. This left sweaters, blouses and tank tops.

2. Create a System in Your Closet

Select which side of your closet you want tank tops to be on, and which one you want sweaters and scarves. It will be easier to browse and hang clothing if it’s separated by style, saving you time each day.

3. Save Space

After I organized my clothes by season and how often I wear them, created a system for hanging clothing using hangers and paperclips to save space in my closet.

Step 1: Take a hanger and lay it out on a flat surface.

Step 2: Take a paper clip and unbend it so it’s long and open.

Step 3: Hook the top of the unbent paper clip around the hanger’s hook and bend the metal so it grasps the hanger firmly.

Step 4: Take a second hanger and bend the remaining metal on the paperclip around the hook of the second hanger.

Step 5: Make sure the paperclip grasps both hangers tightly and the second hanger hangs evenly from the first hanger.

Step 6: Repeat as desired to hold as many hangers as you want. I usually hang 3.

Step 7: Group clothes by style. I usually hang tank tops together, pants together, etc. Hang your clothes on the hangers carefully, starting with the top hanger.

Step 8: Hang in your closet and watch how much space you save!

4. Look Fabulous

Now that your clothes are more organized, you will be more likely to wear and enjoy each item. Now get out there!

Organizing your closet is a healthy way to refresh your wardrobe and lifestyle. By organizing my closet, I was able to locate clothing I hadn’t seen in months and rotate it back into my routine. There’s a reason you bought these clothes to begin with, so wear them!
