Petroglyphs at Buffalo Eddy: Along the Snake River near Asotin, Washington

Imagine stepping into a world where you travel down the river by boat, at the mercy of currents and rapids, where the only light at night is by fire and leaving written communication required hours of complex chiseling of pictures. That’s what we stumbled upon when we went out in search of Buffalo Eddy, a historical site of special significance for the Nez Pearce tribe. Continue reading

Rustic Purple French Fries and Alder Smoked Wild Salmon Chowder

Sometimes you just want French fries for dinner. I sourced some incredible purple and pink potatoes from the farmer’s market and on a busy day, decided I was going to eat a ton of French fries and call it a full-balanced meal. With some Alder Smoked Wild Salmon Chowder by Fishpeople on the side for dipping, this was a delight. Continue reading

Cajun-Style Spicy White and Black Beans (Adapted from Mama Ella’s White Beans)

Cajun food is close to my heart since my mom I from Louisiana and recently after a long and grey cloudy day, I decided to make a recipe that’s pretty familiar to me: spicy beans and rice. I have a great cookbook for Cajun food by Elizabeth Choate (Yes, from the TV show Swamp People!) that featured a delicious looking recipe for Mama Ella’s White Beans, so I decided to adapt that. I made a couple of changes based off of what was in my pantry at the time, but I bet the original recipe is finger-lickin’ good! Continue reading

While my love of blossoms is huge, so is the amount of different species in the world. I’d never know some of the varieties of common favorites since there are so many hybrids and types, but I love the opportunity to dive into a specific kind. Continue reading

I love homemade ice cream and I remember doing elementary school science projects that took hours, used rock salt and involved lots of hand cranking in order to get some of the delicious creamy treat. Since I neither have hours for hand cranking, nor rock salt, nor an ice cream maker, I have been out of luck. Continue reading

Baking Around the World: Globe In Artisan Box Review: Bake

I’ve always been fascinated by other cultures since I’ve traveled a bunch and spent some brief times living in other countries. As an anthropologist, I also love to experience the arts, culture, foods, music, you name it about other countries and peoples. Globe In is one of the coolest subscription boxes I’ve seen since it sources from all over the globe, directly from the people who made the products. It’s “fair trade” at its finest. Blending in With the Blossoms on a Wildflower Drive

Last night, I went out in search of summer flowers. Having been disappointed at a thunderstorm that dumped rain on the spring blooms a few weeks ago and melted them, I was excited to see that the summer seasonal blossoms were coming into full bloom! Continue reading
