I could feel the wet moisture in the air as we walked through the basin of the waterfall. I love that you can still feel the wind current of what used to be water in waves in a prehistoric riverbed. Palouse Falls is a special and ancient waterfall that is one of the biggest in the state of Washington. You’d never know it since it’s tucked into a deep canyon and hidden away behind farmland.

Palouse Falls is an amazing waterfall located in Eastern Washington. It’s about an hour and a half away from Pullman, Washington but it is worth the drive. In honor of recently celebrating National Park’s Week, I wanted to share my recent trip this this breathtaking waterfall.

As you approach the waterfall, the landscape doesn’t appear to change. Rocky bluffs and flat farmland are all the eye can see so it’s surprising that a waterfall can be in a place like this. After coming across the entry gate into Palouse Falls (which was far from impressive), we found ourselves in the parking lot and just a few steps away from an incredible view of an incredible waterfall.

The size of the surrounding canyon is breathtaking. We sat at the edge of the cliff and thought about how different this place would look a couple thousand years before. The waterfall would have been enormous and swallowed up by a water current strong enough to move the hills of the Palouse. The waterfall wouldn’t even exist.

Basalt columns line the canyon and shape the waterfall. They stand like towers and remind you of Middle Earth or something medieval.

We took a hike down to the base of the river that leads to the falls and experienced the fresh wet atmosphere with larger than life sized sagebrush plants. These are the largest and most historic sagebrush plants in the state of Washington.

Palouse Falls is a beautiful park that’s well worth the trip. The beauty is one-of-a kind!
